Tamworth teens make the cut for bangarra mentoring program
Randy, 16, has gone to meet his school's leadership development specialist and his sister's mentor to learn how to be a better man.
He did so at the Mentor Camp at Dunbago Girls Primary in Dunbago in May.
The mentoring program offers youth a place to come, learn new skills and connect with other teens through mentorship.
Randy says his mother had told him there were no jobs in the youth justice system, and he was worried about going to the school and getting involved with gangs.
"My mom always said, 'it's OK, we're in the mainstream now so it doesn't matter how you turn out', but what I remember thinking was, 'there's no way I'm getting into the school or school system'," he said.
"It just felt like we could do something and help these kids and be positive."
It was a very positive experience for him.
"It changed my perspective on life... we came together to figure out a way out of the situations we were in and find a better life for ourselves, and that was a really awesome feeling," he said.
Randy's family and friends also participated in the mentoring.
"We can't thank people enough for providing us with everything the mentoring program has to offer, it's been very much an honour and an exciting experience," said his mom, Lisa.
"We've come across children that we want to see become leaders in the future, and Randy is one of them," said his brother, Dwayne.
