"I love my mum. My dad is my hero and my heroes are the kids who can never get their own records, but I love playing against her."
When the call came in for an interview about the future of the team at the start of the season, Murray agreed to do it because it would help his young family cope with the pressures of going up against the best. "I'm one of the lucky ones," he says. "I have parents that appreciate my talent.
"I played against <Tony> Adams, <Dwayne> Hawley, Tom Cook and Michael Owen all in my teens and have been part of teams who could not beat the best. Then of course we won the League Cup but we failed to get the trophy because we finished fourth last season.
"That was the most difficult season of my career, but having played against some of the top players on the planet, it helps in terms of trying to deal with it now. It's something I am sure will help me go from being the youngest person to being the oldest. I hope it helps a lot of people."
As it happens, one of those younger members of the group was Andy Murray, who, for several hours last week, was in the same car as Murray when they went racing through the paddock at the track that became known as the Green Hell. Murray was having a ball, saying it was "a shame we weren't in touch longer", but before he could get out of the car to tell Murray about it, an important decision had been made.
"He said he'd heard we might get picked by the GPs and he wanted to talk to me," Murray said. "Andy was at home watching the highlights on his phone and then the GPs call happened."
"That's when I knew it was the right thing to do. I was actually in hospital when it happened, so that made the timing even easier. Andy was going to play against someone from Liverpool. The moment that came out of that phone call has saved my career."
Murray finished second to world champion Andy Roddick in the world rankings in 2005, before a fall during the 2007 race led to a major knee injury. Although he started racing again after his rehabilitation, he didn't achieve the form that had been in the early going. The loss of this form came as a result of the way the world championship was arranged, as the top six of the rankings weren't put up against one another for the first time in a season. It also meant it was difficult to match those same four in the rest of the British world championship.
